Native App and Screening Room Workflow

A director's cut review with three people who are not in the suite: the producer on set with an iPad, the director at home with an Apple TV, and the studio's screening room, where the picture must come up on the projector over SDI. The suite streams as in a standard review; this page covers how each of them watches. For most clients a browser link is still the simplest way in.

Host

  1. Create and activate the project and start the stream. See Create a Project.
  2. On the Sessions page, under Watch link, you have everything the three viewers need: the link, the QR code button, and the Session ID and Password. See Session Access and Invites.
  3. Each of the three appears in the Viewers panel like any other viewer. The screening room shows up under its receiver name with Pixelview Desktop as the device. See Viewer Management.

Producer on an iPad

  1. Install Pixelview Player from the App Store. See iPhone and iPad Apps.
  2. Open the Watch link on the iPad, and it opens in the app. If the producer is standing next to you, Scan QR-code in the app with the QR code from Admin instead, or enter the Stream ID and Password and tap Connect.
  3. The session stays in the app's project list, with its title, thumbnail and whether it is live, paused or offline, so the next day's review is one tap away.
  4. For a color-critical review on an iPad Pro, turn on Reference Mode and turn off True Tone, Night Shift and automatic brightness.

Chat, video chat and annotations all work in the app, so the producer can take part in the conversation and not just watch.

Director on an Apple TV

  1. Open Pixelview Player on the Apple TV so it shows its QR code.
  2. On an iPhone or iPad that already has the session, choose View on Apple TV, or scan the Apple TV's QR code, and authorize the session. The Apple TV can also take the Stream ID and password typed in with the remote. See Apple TV Viewing.
  3. Start playback. The session stays in the Apple TV's project list for later.

Apple TV is for watching: chat and annotations stay on the iPhone or iPad. It is an SDR viewer, so an HDR session is tone-mapped to SDR there. Name the project clearly so it is easy to pick out on the TV.

Screening room over SDI

  1. On an Apple Silicon Mac with a Blackmagic output device, open Pixelview Desktop and select the Receiving tab. No account or pairing is needed. (Receiving is Mac only.)
  2. Enter the Session ID and Password from the host and a Receiver name the host will recognize, such as Screening Room SDI.
  3. Click DeckLink output settings… and set Mode to the frame rate the suite is streaming, Output range to what the projector expects, and Output format to 10-bit 4:2:2 Y'CbCr or 10-bit 4:4:4 RGB.
  4. Click Start receiving and check picture and sound on the projector. See Receive a Stream and Play Out over SDI.

The receiver takes one viewer seat. If it is removed with Kick, or the project is deleted or expires, the output stops and the receiver cannot rejoin that session.
